Devin Cooley

2024 Free Agency Day Recap: San Jose Sharks

Big news from the crease: former San Jose Sharks goalie and Bay Area native Devin Cooley is heading north to join the Calgary Flames on a two-year deal. That’s right—Cooley is swapping the teal for the red.

Cooley, who made his NHL debut with the Sharks last season, played six games for his childhood team. His standout moment? Snagging his first home win against the St. Louis Blues. This Los Gatos native didn’t just make waves in the Shark Tank; he made a splash big enough to catch the attention of the Flames.

In a season where the Sharks faced more turbulence than a Zamboni on a gravel road, Cooley emerged as a shining star. He not only became the first Bay Area native to tend goal for the Sharks but also won fans over with his animated and candid post-game interviews. Cooley’s charisma and on-ice prowess made him an instant fan-favorite.

Now, he’s signed a two-way contract for the 2024-25 season ($775,000 NHL/$400,000 AHL) and a one-way ticket to the big leagues in 2025-26, earning a cool $775,000. Talk about leveling up!

Cooley credits the Sharks and goalie coach Thomas Speer for elevating his game to new heights. In his own words:

“Even though my time playing for San Jose was short, it will always hold a special place in my heart and be the place of my best hockey memories to date. Even though I won’t be playing for the Sharks anymore, I’ll still be watching from the outside as a fan, just like I have been since I was a kid (except when they’re playing Calgary of course haha).”

The Flames have another Bay Area native on their roster—Dustin Wolf from Gilroy. With Cooley likely slotting in as the No. 3 netminder behind Wolf and Dan Vladar, the Flames are building quite the California connection.

Meanwhile, the Sharks are on the hunt for a new No. 3 goalie to back up Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek. Stay tuned, Shark fans, because the goalie carousel is in full swing!

So, as we bid adieu to Devin Cooley in the Shark Tank, we wish him all the best in Calgary.
